What is a single permit?

A single permit is an essential permit for non-EU citizens who want to work in Belgium. It combines the required work and residence permits and should simplify the recruitment process. To obtain a single permit, there are several conditions that must be met.

What are the conditions?

Single permits are available for positions listed on the VDAB list of mid-skilled bottleneck professions and for highly educated bottleneck professions. To obtain a single permit, the foreign worker must not only have the necessary skills but also hold a graduate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. Often, proof of good conduct and a medical examination are also required.

As an employer, you must provide, among other things, a detailed job description, correct salary scaling, and an employment contract. These are all things that we take care of at Job Talent.

For candidates who meet the necessary requirements, we first apply for a work permit from the Flemish government. Once we have approval, we proceed to the federal government to apply for the residence permit. These two permits together form the single permit, with which we can apply for the foreign worker’s visa. After this, your new employee can come to Belgium and start the next step in their career. 

What should you consider?

Unfortunately, a major challenge with single permits is the long processing time, which can sometimes take several months. This is something we have little impact on. However, this does not stop us from maximizing our expertise and good contacts with government agencies to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
